A horse’s winter coat is more than just fluff.
When temperatures drop, a horse’s coat becomes a highly effective insulation system:
• Each hair can stand on end (piloerection), trapping warm air close to the skin• The dense winter coat creates a layered barrier that blocks wind and sheds snow.• Snow sitting on the coat actually means the insulation is working because you can easily see that the heat isn’t escaping!• When dry and well-fed, horses regulate warmth without shivering.
Healthy horses with good, thick winter coats don’t need blankets, provided they have a shelter to get away from wind and heavy precipitation.
