Normalize taking things slow: Early in the summer our girl Minka had her very first solo outdoor ride!
She was brave, calm, attentive and, most importantly, trusting. Some folks might say we’ve taken things slow with Minka’s training. And they’re right, we have. Because we train from a horse-first perspective: one that gives the horse space to learn, process, investigate and build trust over time. This has been proven to create emotionally healthier, and overall safer and more consistent, horses in the long term. We train for long term success, not immediate gratification. This approach also allows for growth, and for us to respond to it properly by remaining flexible. For those with horses, you know this means determining saddle fit, adjusting, refitting, and sometimes finding a new saddle altogether.

The amazing thing? This same approach is just as powerful in our human spaces, especially the workplace. Just substitute “horse” for team, and “saddle” for operations.
Ask yourself:
- Does your team have space to be curious?
- Is it okay to ask questions, move carefully, and reflect?
- Are people supported to build confidence—not just produce outcomes?
- Are your operations and systems flexible—is change welcomed or are you “married” to the way it has always been?
Letting employees move at a sustainable pace, with time for reflection and questions, leads to:
- Lower burnout & stress
- Higher innovation & retention
- Stronger team dynamics, wellness, and performance
Flexibility to reexamine systems and modify operations increases employee buy-in and sense of ownership. Change is good! In fact, companies with engaged employees see 21% higher profitability!
So... how can you bring the principles of curiosity, reflection, and flexibility into your workplace?
