Why do some horses wear blankets in the winter?
Horses are built for cold, but not all horses are built the same. Blankets can help when:
• A horse is clipped, older, very young, or underweight.
• Weather is wet, windy, or rapidly changing.
• A horse can’t grow a full winter coat.
• Energy needs are higher and calories need to go toward health, not heat.
Blanketing isn’t about “spoiling” horses, it’s about supporting the systems they already have.Good horsemanship means reading the individual horse, not following one rule for all. Two of Knight School’s horses never wear blankets, even in extreme cold, while Titan here is more of a fair-weather boy.
