How does a warhorse survive a Canadian winter?

Jaclyn and Minka of Camelot (our Friesian queen) explain how horses stay warm in extreme cold.

Surprisingly, horses are very well adapted to cold temperatures, even being able to stay warm at rest or low activity in temperatures as low as -40C.

Piloerection is a muscular contraction in the skin that lifts hairs in their coat, allowing them to trap air and keep it warm.

Hind gut fermentation is when horses digest hay, which literally creates internal heat (nature’s furnace ). Stay tuned for more extreme cold tips and facts while we make it through this long Canadian winter!
