Preparing for Your First Renaissance Faire: Tips, Tricks & What Not to Miss

Hear ye, hear ye! If thou art venturing to thine very first Renaissance faire, prepare thyself for a day filled with merriment, music, turkey legges, and time-traveling delights. Whether you’re heading to a local faire or making a medieval road trip out of it, here are some essential tips and tricks to help you make the most of your first Ren faire experience.

  1. Dress the Part (or Not—But It’s More Fun If You Do!)

You don’t have to wear a costume, but dressing up truly adds to the experience. You’ll see lords and ladies, jesters, knights, pirates, and fairies wandering the grounds. Don’t be afraid to get creative—even a simple tunic, long skirt, or flower crown can help you blend right in. Don’t be surprised if you see some costumes that seem a little more adventurous. It is common to see various time travelers (think Star Trek, Doctor Who, Doctor Strange, Loki, etc.), fantasy characters or animals (unicorns, dragons, trolls, wizards, etc.) or popular movie characters. A renaissance faire is the place where nearly every costume is accepted!

  1. Arrive Early, Stay Late

Renaissance faires often offer full-day lineups of performances, parades, jousts, and interactive games. Arriving early helps you beat the crowds, grab a good parking spot, and plan your day around scheduled shows. There are often so many performances that schedules overlap. Staying all day means you get the best chance to be able to see as many shows as possible. Staying late? You might catch torchlit performances, cannons or a closing ceremony!

    1. See a Show (Or Ten!)

Comedy duels, Shakespearean plays, swordfights, birds of prey, musical minstrels, acrobats, and live jousting—there’s something for everyone. Most shows are family-friendly, though some are “PG-13” and best saved for older attendees. Pick up a schedule at the entrance and plan your must-sees!

Fun Tip! Be sure to snap a picture of the performer's troupes/companies while at the faire! If you post pictures or videos on social media, be sure to tag them. Renaissances faire performers are often so busy that they never get the chance to see other shows, or get pictures of themselves! They absolutely love check social media for pictures and videos from the day's events!

    1. Bring Gold (A.K.A. Cash)

Many vendors accept credit or debit, but some operate on a cash-only basis—especially for food, drink, and games. ATMs are usually on-site but may have long lines and fees, so come prepared with some medieval coin.

    1. Talk the Talk (If You Dare)

Don’t worry—you don’t NEED to speak in “thee” and “thou,” but it can be fun to try! Most cast members and vendors stay in character, so feel free to play along. A cheerful “Good morrow!” or “Huzzah!” will earn you a smile.

    1. Pack the Essentials

You’ll be outdoors most of the day, so bring:

    • Sunscreen and a hat
    • A refillable water bottle (check if they allow outside containers)
    • Comfortable shoes—faires can span acres of uneven ground
    • A small bag or pouch for treasures and trinkets
    • Bug spray

    1. Try Something New

Shoot a bow and arrow, eat a turkey leg, learn to dance like a bard, or try your hand at axe throwing. Renaissance faires are full of hands-on activities and unique experiences. Say “yes” to the fun!

    1. Take Pictures, But Be Respectful

Photos are welcome, but always ask before snapping a portrait of a performer or guest in costume. Many attendees spend months crafting their outfits, and they’ll often be happy to pose for you if asked politely. Avoid taking pictures of merchant’s booths or merchandise that you do not plan on purchasing.

    1. Watch for Secret Magic

Some faires have secret storylines or roaming quests you can join. Ask cast members about hidden games and challenges, or check social media ahead of time. You never know—you might help a wizard save the kingdom or uncover a lost relic!

    1. Bring Your Sense of Wonder

Above all, Renaissance faires are about imagination, creativity, and community. Embrace the whimsy, cheer loudly at the joust, and don’t be afraid to let your inner adventurer roam free.
